hautsache
A dance piece by Ilona Pászthy

Two dancers and an actor meet each other, each coming with his own “identity”, his own territory in which he feels at home. One comes across the other, experiences borders and oppositions, is ignored, asserts himself, gives up, hesitates, evaluates, and distances himself. He is constantly on the search for belonging and definition, individuality and identity.

“The fundament of my choreographic work is the choreographed interplay between the differing artistic elements with dance on the stage. The coming together, the moments of friction where the genres don’t serve each other but instead stand in the way of another, perhaps even obstruct each other, is what interests me. What provokes me are the transformations and the resulting structures. “ Ilona Pászthy

Ilona Paszthy, in 2003 honored with the Cologne Dance Prize for her production „TAUSENDhertz“, now, together with a dancer and an actor, delves beneath the skin of personal identity with “Hautsache”, lets her characters as masked bodies disappear into a flexible, white, spacious object and sends them into a powerful battle for their own self-assertion. Generalanzeiger Bonn, 25.09.2006

The world on our skin
As the biggest organ of the individual, the skin doesn’t only keep together our body, it also defines us from our surrounding. It gives us information about the state of the objective world and also about our feelings and perceptions in it. (…)The most intense parts of the piece are the women duets, -both dancers dressed in white costumes-, when it seems that the “I” is talking with itself in a critically, playful and ironical manner. Whereas the man is loosing himself into monologues(…)The stage is very delicately designed in light colours with a big extended skin: the dancers can sculpture the soft material with their bodies which they do in a very sensual way.
